NFL RULE? What would happen if a team runs a play and the running back breaks down the sideline and...? As the guy is running he is holding out the ball taunting the other teams sideline when someone from the other team reaches out and knocks the ball out of his hands. The ball goes out of bounds. So what would the ruling be?

If he had a clear path to the end zone, they would call it a touchdown. A taunting penalty would be called on the running back and the person that swatted the ball away would be penalized, thrown out and fined. They create a distance where the sideline players cannot stand so this never happens.

There has not been a precedent for that, and I'm not aware of an official written rule in that regard. I would imagine the ball would be placed about 15 yards beyond the foul with an automatic first down and the player who knocked it out would be given a hefty fine and possibly ejected from the game or suspended for future games.

The team who was controlling the ball at that time, so the team of the running back. If a ball is knocked out of bounds it goes back to the controlling team, it only changes possesion if the other team controls it in bounds, or it goes out of bounds in the opposing teams TD then it is a Touchback.
